Stainless Steel Helix Staircase

LOCATION:  Park Avenue, New York
DESIGN:  Helix staircase with lateral stainless steel stringer and balusters, steam-bent birch handrail, and maple treads

Conceived, designed, and built by Serett, this custom helix staircase was created as the defining architectural gesture within a Park Avenue residence. Sculptural in form yet exacting in execution, the stair brings together a lateral stainless steel stringer and balusters, maple treads, and a custom steam-bent hardwood handrail that twists and rolls gracefully along the curve of the ascent.

The piece was designed to feel fully integrated with the apartment rather than simply placed within it. Its sweeping geometry draws the eye upward, while the restrained palette of metal and wood gives the staircase a quiet confidence appropriate to the surrounding interior. Every element was resolved to balance visual lightness with structural presence, allowing the stair to serve as both circulation and centerpiece.

The project also required a high level of technical coordination. Because the apartment offered limited access and a small elevator, the staircase was engineered and fabricated as a modular system off site, then assembled with precision in the residence itself. Over the course of a three-week installation, Serett established a temporary metal shop on location to complete the work to the standards the setting demanded.

This project reflects Serett’s approach to custom stair design in New York: thoughtful engineering, disciplined fabrication, and a deep sensitivity to architecture, material, and place.
